Infectologist Dumpis: around 12% of Latvians have had Covid-19

Ministry of Health's chief infectologist, referring to a study not yet published, told Latvian Television April 25 that around 12% of the population could have overcome the infection in Latvia.

That is nearly twice the number of positive Covid-19 tests. Since the start of the pandemic, the Covid-19 infection in Latvia has been confirmed in around 115,000 people, representing around 6% of the 1.89 million inhabitants of Latvia. As is known, Covid-19 infection may occur without symptoms, so some people have not turned to a doctor and conducted a Covid-19 test.

The extent to which the virus has spread can be found by detection of Covid-19 antibodies in the body. This year, out of an investigated 15,780 tests, Covid-19 antibodies have been detected in 2,074 blood donors, according to data from the State Blood Center for March. The proportion of positive cases has increased to 15%.

At the moment, 2% of Latvian society have undergone the full vaccination course against Covid-19, but around 12% have received at least one dose.
