Latvia-bought ambulance delivered to hospital in Ukraine

Take note – story published 1 year ago

An ambulance bought as a result of donations from Latvian companies and individuals has been successfully delivered to Ukraine, where it is already in service, reports LSM's Russian-language service.

As previously reported by LSM, collections started in October and within a month, the modern ambulance was bought, filled with supplies and delivered to the recently-liberated city of Izium, in Kharkiv region.

Journalist Alexey Dunda accompanied the ambulance on its journey and his diary and photographs of the trip and the handing over of the keys to the ambulance at Izium hospital can be seen on LSM's Russian-language service: https://rus.lsm.lv/statja/za-efirom/za-efirom/dnevnik-skoroy-dlja-ukraini-den-7-bolnica.a483395/?utm_source=lsm&utm_medium=article-bottom&utm_campaign=article

Sergey Snegirev, one of the organizers of the initiative, told LSM English: "We have successfully delivered the ambulance and a literal tonne of medicine. We were given a tour of the hospital. The surgery wing is non-existent. We went down to the basement, a really terrible place, where they lived and operated for 3 months.

"While we were unloading the crates, a man was brought in. He went to pick mushrooms and stepped on a landmine, the so-called butterfly mine. It does not kill but it maims. His heel was blown clear off his foot, just part of the bone remained. The war never went away despite the liberation and the mines will continue to be a problem for years."

"We then went on a rescue mission with Kharkiv Help. We went to about 10km from the front line, beyond Kupyansk, to medevac a person with leg problems. No roads there, essentially. We took the man and delivered him to the Kharkiv City Hospital. They told us they had no electricity for over 3 months but they do have central gas now, which means heat, which is good news.

"We also went on another mission, delivering World Food packs to a few villages. Local authorities and some pseudo volunteers aren't doing a good job, so there is a huge warehouse of food that wasn't getting delivered to the end recepients for a few months. Kharkiv Help will take care of it now, they keep lists, and write proper reports.

"The winter is coming, that is the main thing everyone is talking about. Small iron stoves, wood supply, generators – things necessary for survival."
