Latvia plans to compensate abortions for rape victims in Ukraine

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Based on information in the public space on cases of sexual abuse in the war in Ukraine, refugees in Latvia will be able to receive state-compensated abortion and related healthcare services, according to the draft amendments approved on April 19 by the government.

In order to simplify and accelerate the accessibility of the services to the victims of sexual violence during the war, it is envisaged that the pregnancy could be discontinued not only in a hospital department of the medical treatment institution but also in outpatient treatment.

It is planned that both gynecological counseling and termination of pregnancy will be provided in one place and the decision to terminate a pregnancy during the course of the consultation will be taken by the gynecologist so that the red tape around the process is reduced.

The amendments still have to be seen by the Saeima.
