115 new cases of COVID-19 and three deaths were recorded in Latvia October 20, taking the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 3,609.

All three of the latest victims were in the 65 to 85 age bracket.

The Disease Prevention and Contol Center (SPKC) said 4,171 tests were conducted during the previous 24-hour period. 2.8% of tests conducted were positive (up from 2.0% the previous day). This last figure is becoming increasingly important as a measure of Latvia's ability to control the spread of the coronavirus. More than 3% means that the disease is spreading uncontrollably.

So far 1,341 patients have recovered from infection. According to SPKC data on October 20 there have now been 46 fatalities.

Data from the National Health Service (NVD) showed 83 patients are being treated in hospital for COVID-19. 79 are reported to have moderate symptoms but four have serious symptoms.

On October 19 the 14-day cumulative number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 of population was in 71.0 Latvia, 90.9 in Lithuania and 35.6 in Estonia, according to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

The threshold for the introduction of compulsory self-isolation upon arrival in Latvia is now pegged to Latvia's own rate last Friday of 61.9.
