In December, on average, ten people a day arrived at a hospital with injuries related to slipping on ice, the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD) said December 14, Latvian Radio reported.

Uģis Zariņš, head doctor of the Traumatology and Orthopedics hospital, said: “Very, very difficult at the moment. The hospital is actually crowded, and opportunities for surgical treatment have been reduced. We're working overtime. There are very many patients who are outpatient. So you should be careful. The chances of helping with each day, if such weather conditions continue, will decrease. Several operations will have to be postponed."

The municipality of Riga called on residents to be especially careful during thaw.

Forecasts show that on Wednesday and Thursday, freezing rain and thaw will prevail. There will be a lot of ice on roads and sidewalks.
