Medics face increasing aggression by vaccination opponents in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

Medical staff are experiencing attacks more and more frequently, especially by opponents of Covid-19 and vaccination, Liene Cipule, head of the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD) told Latvian Radio August 22.

As reported by LSM, just over a week ago, a NMPD team was attacked while working at the scene. NMPD has turned to the police after the incident.

Liene Cipule told Latvian Radio that aggressive comments from the Internet are moving to real life. In such cases, the Service has started to educate the medics more about action in conflict situations.

"There are cases where teams are provoked, filmed, harsh exchanges are forming. Why did we focus on this particular case - it involved people working on social networks to develop a variety of compromising materials about health system institutions and disturbing the public. The public has no understanding of the conditions under which medics are working and what challenges are ahead of us. But the medics have realized that the process that is currently taking place cannot simply be stopped and public opinion be changed. Therefore, we are issuing guidelines on how medics can handle conflict situations, how to deal with them, so that they do not grow into real conflicts, which are often the case."
