The number of cancer cases diagnosed at an early stage has increased in Latvia, enabling more patients to start cancer treatment early, the National Health Service informed LETA.

Thanks to family physicians, 5,030 cancer patients were diagnosed at an early stage last year, which is 26 patients more than in 2016. Most of these cases were registered in Riga, which also happens to have the largest number of family physicians.

"Family physicians play an important role in early cancer diagnosis," explained the Health Service's public relations officer Agnese Jasenovica. The state pays family physicians €71.14 for each case of cancer diagnosed at an early stage.
