Speaking after a government meeting, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš said:
"Presently in our country there are 60 known cases of COVID-19 virus. The good news - so to speak - is that up to this point we knew exactly where people became ill with this virus. It is still the case that in Latvia no cases of social transmission have been detected, all sources are clearly known."
He paid tribute to medical professionals and others working for the public good in the crisis situation, and said the government had agreed measures to adjust the rules regarding use of sick notes for work and paid sick leave.
Kariņš said efforts to repatriate nationals overseas would continue, and that upon their return all would need to sign a form agreeing to enter self-quarantine. The government also agreed measures to ensure stocks of medicines would remain sufficient and available.
Health Minister Ilze Viņķele emphasised that the situation was under control and confirmed the 60 figure.
"We were ready for the number of infected people would rise, that has happened and we remain in the situation in which every case of infection can be accounted for," Viņķele said.
Screening at the airport had proven to be a success and regardless of test results, all returning travellers must go into self-quarantine, she underlined.
"I repeat - to protect your nearest and dearest, self-quarantine is not a choice, is not a request from the government, it is a pledge tin favor of society's health," Viņķele said.
