Rīga's water pipes to be chlorine-cleaned over coming days

Take note – story published 2 years and 10 months ago

From June 30 to July 2, preventive disinfection or chlorination of water supply networks is planned throughout Rīga, according to Rīga City Council (RD)

It is recommended that drinking water should be boiled during the disinfection period and also for 24 hours after it. However, water can be safely used for domestic purposes such as cleaning without boiling, said the municipal water company "Rīgas ūdens".

Disinfection of water supply networks for preventive purposes is recommended at least once every two years and according to the World Health Organization is a necessary water treatment, RD pointed out.

Disinfection of water mains is most often performed with chlorine and its compounds. These substances are not harmful or dangerous to health in the concentrations used for disinfection purposes, but they give off an unpleasant odor during water disinfection and may have a slight chlorine taste.
