On Wednesday, October 6, it is planned to start offering a third dose of Covid-19 vaccine to seniors over the age of 65, Health Minister Daniels Pavļuts said at the government meeting Tuesday.

Vaccination against Covid-19 with an additional dose is recommended for:

  • persons over 65 years of age,
  • adult clients of social care centers and nursing homes,
  • healthcare workers who have long-term exposure to both Covid-19 patients and non-vaccinated Covid-19 patients;
  • persons with highly suppressed immunity.

The Minister noted that vaccination with an additional dose is recommended not earlier than six months after the second dose.

An additional dose is recommended for those people who have previously received Pfizer/BioNTech or AstraZeneca vaccines against Covid-19. On the other hand, the research for additional dose needs for “Moderna” and “Janssen” are still ongoing.

The Minister of Health also said that 937 000 or 49.5% of all residents had received at least one shot against Covid-19 by Tuesday, October 5.  Vaccination against Covid-19 is increasing in the past two weeks, related to the availability of the Janssen vaccine and growing concerns about the spread of Covid-19, the minister explained. The vaccination coverage is nearing 100% in the healthcare system. The biggest concern is the low vaccination of seniors and people with chronic illness.
