Tonsillitis on the rise due to heat in Latvia

The drastic fluctuations in temperature, from the swelter in the streets to the cool air indoors, have increased cases of pharyngal inflammation, some of which require serious medical treatment, the LSM Latvian service's reported on June 12.

Children, elders and people with chronic diseases are the most vulnerable in this weather and should avoid exposure to cold air.

The Emergency Medical Services urge everyone to take special care of infants and elders and always have a water bottle when leaving home. It is also recommended to wear a hat and thin clothing. From eleven in the morning to three in the afternoon it is best to stay out of the sun. Likewise, one must not jump into the water straight away when overheated.

On June 12, the temperature in the major part of Latvia ranged from +25 to +30 degrees Celsius, reached +32 degrees C in the south, while in Kurzeme and the north of Vidzeme +19 to +24 degrees Celsius.
