Ogre set to ban Moscow-time fireworks on New Year's eve

In the municipality of Ogre, it is planned to permit fireworks only at midnight on New Year's Eve, as provided for in the draft binding regulations of the local government, LETA reported December 3.

The use of fireworks and stage pyrotechnic articles in the territory of Ogre municipality during the anniversary is planned to be permitted between December 31, 0:00 and January 1, 1:00.

The explanatory memorandum to the draft binding regulations states that the use of pyrotechnic articles often starts at 23:00, when the New Year begins in Moscow.

According to the authors of the ban, fireworks after Moscow time show the views of a certain group of society, the desire to express support and affiliation with the Russian regime, which does not coincide with the values of the majority of Latvian society.

Consequently, taking into account the strategic principles and priorities for the prevention of threats to the State specified in the National Security Concept, separate regulations have been specified in the draft binding regulations.

Residents may submit opinions and proposals regarding the draft binding regulations in writing to the local government by December 15.
