Big fire in central Rīga overnight to Friday

Due to two fires in Rīga, adjacent Zvaigžņu Street and Laboratorijas Street, over 40 people had to evacuate from two buildings on Thursday, May 9 evening, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) said in a statement.

At 20:32 a call was received to Zvaigžņu Street in Rīga, where a door on the fourth floor of a six-story residential house was burning in an area of 10 square meters.

30 people evacuated from the building before the VUGD arrived. Two people were rescued by firefighters.

At 20:58 the fire was extinguished, and the VUGD worked for two more hours at the scene.

Meanwhile, nine minutes after that call, the VUGD received a call to nearby Laboratorijas Street, where a two-story wooden building had caught fire.

Two people were rescued by firefighters, while two more people were rescued by State Police officers before the VUGD arrived. 13 people evacuated from the building on their own. Adjacent residential homes were also inspected, but there was no smoke in them and no evacuation was required.

At the scene, the second floor of a residential house in an area of 150 m2 burned, the first floor in an area of 100 m2 and the roof in an area of 320 m2, as well as four cars in the courtyard in an area of 24 m2 and the facade of the adjacent house in 100 m2. More than 35 firefighter rescuers with eight firetrucks and three ladders took part in the fire-fighting efforts.

Friday morning at 07:07 firefighters rescuers closed the work at the scene.

An eyewitness told Latvian Radio that the surrounding streets were filled with people who had run out onto the street with their pets and belongings.
