'112 Latvia' app launched to easily reach emergency services

A new app '112 Latvija' and website 112.lv have been created to provide comprehensive information and advice in different emergencies, the State Fire and Rescue Service told Latvian Radio on February 12.

112 is Latvia's joint emergency service number through which you can reach police, firefighters, emergency medical team, and other specialists in situations where there is immediate danger to health and life. The number has been in operation for 27 years.

The new app 112 Latvija gives the user several options: call or send a text message to the single emergency call number 112, receive notifications of potential threats, and learn how to handle various dangerous situations.

The 112 Latvija app user will be able to receive a notification on their smartphone screen about potential threats, such as red or orange-level warnings about hazardous weather conditions, siren test alerts and other events that require immediate action or caution.

When you call the single emergency call number 112 from the 112 Latvija application, dispatchers will see the approximate caller location. This will provide an opportunity to provide more operational assistance to those residents who cannot give the exact address of the accident. For the controller to see the location of the person, you must allow the application to access the telephone location at the time of installation or later.

Sending a text message to 112 should not be a daily solution for rapid notification of operational services, VUGD notes. This function is meant for people with a speech or hearing disability and for people without a Latvian SIM card, as well as possibly in situations where it is crucial not to make noise.

Alongside this, in the 112 Latvija app, residents will be able to familiarize themselves with tips on how to deal with various threats and learn about the current operational services. This function is also available on the website 112.lv.

You can download the 112 Latvija app from Google Play and AppStore sites. The app is available in Latvian and English.
