On Tuesday, January 16, the Cabinet of Ministers issued an order to admit 48 persons to Latvian citizenship through the naturalization procedure.

The 48 applicants for citizenship include one child. More than two thirds choosing Latvian citizenship are ethnic Russians (69%) while 13% are Belarusians, and 8% Ukrainians and other nationalities.

In total, 149,425 persons have been admitted to Latvian citizenship through naturalization since 1996. Last year the total was 595 persons.

In order to become a citizen of Latvia through naturalization, a person must fulfil residency criteria and prove a basic knowledge of the Latvian language, Constitution, history and the national anthem.

Congratulations to all of our new fellow citizens!
