The Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) will send out information letters this week about the expiry of residence permits to those Russian citizens who have not submitted documents requesting the status of long-term resident of the European Union (EU), the PMLP said September 20.

PMLP stated that by September 1 this year, 3,541 persons had not submitted documents requesting the status of a long-term resident of the EU or had not applied for a re-examination of their official language competence. In accordance with Paragraph 58 of transitional provisions of the Immigration Law, their permanent residence permits expired on September 2 this year.

“Consequently, these persons must leave the territory of the Republic of Latvia by November 30, 2023,” the PMLP stated.

If such persons nevertheless wish to continue to reside in the Republic of Latvia and are subject to the Law on the status of a long-term resident of the European Union in the Republic of Latvia or any of the grounds laid down in the Immigration Law for requesting a temporary residence permit or a permanent residence permit, they may submit an appropriate application to the PMLP.

It is known that in total 13,147 Russian citizens have registered for the Latvian language test, while 11,301 have taken the test. 39% of test-takers have been able to pass the test on their first attempt. More than 6,500 people have applied for a re-examination.
