While Jānis was the most popular male name throughout most of Latvia's history as an independent state, recent years have seen the popularity of the name diminishing. The popularity of the name Līga is stable.
According to data from the Citizenship and Migration Affairs Office, name days will be celebrated by 9,716 Līga and 46,051 Jānis. Last year, there were 9,820 people of the name Līga and 47,185 Jānis, but in 2021 – 9,871 Līga and 48,311 Jānis. For comparison, back in 2004, Latvia had 10,672 Līga and 67,244 Jānis.
51 babies born this year were named Jānis and three – Līga.
