Latvia plans stricter supervision on pet breeding

The owner or keeper of a pet will have a duty to register the fact of reproduction of the animal, according to a proposal supported at the meeting of the National Economy, Agrarian, Environment and Regional Policy Commission on Wednesday, February 28.

The owner will have to make a checkmark in the database of the domestic animal register.

Members of the Commission also supported the proposal prepared by the ZM, which requires the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) to control and monitor the places where animals are bred.

Agriculture Ministry considers that amendments to the Veterinary Medicine Law should also be made for better supervision of the reproduction of animals.

Gundega Bidere, head of the Animal Protection Society "Ķepu ķepā", said the current requirements, which stipulate that all dogs should be registered, are met by 30% of dog owners. 44% of breed dog owners have registered their animals in 2023. According to her, registering on the Agricultural Data Center Register is “quite ridiculous” because the regulation already in place is not being followed by dog owners.

The proposals still have to be viewed by the Saeima.
