38 more people become Latvian citizens via naturalization

The number of Latvian citziens in the world as grown by 38 after the cabinet on June 30 approved the latest 38 candidates to successfully complete the naturalization process.

Of the 38 applicants for citizenship, 63% are ethnic Russians, 10% Ukrainians, 15% Belarusians, and the number also includes Lithuanians, Poles and other nationalities.

13% of applicants for citizenship have basic education, 57% - secondary education, 28% - higher education.

In the coming days, new citizens will receive official notification by post from the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) as well as information about getting a new Latvian citizen's passport.

In order to become a Latvian citizen through naturalization, a person must apply to the PMLP and sit tests displaying basic proficiency in the Latvian language and knowledge of the Constitution, the text of the national anthem and knowledge of Latvian history.

The latest batch brings the total number of people who have naturalized since 1995 to 147,606.
