91 people become New Year Latvian citizens

A meeting of the Latvian government on January 7 approved citizenship for 91 more people who have undergone the process of naturalization, a total which includes four children qualifying with parents.

Of the 87 applicants for citizenship, 75% are ethnic Russians, 8% Ukrainians and 8% Belarusians, with Lithuanians, Poles and other nationalities also represented.

22% of citizenship applicants have basic education, 44% have secondary education and 32% have higher education.

147,168 persons have been granted Latvian citizenship by naturalization since 1995, with the number naturalizing in 2019 running to 808 persons.

In order to become a Latvian citizen by naturalization, a person must meet residency criteria, demonstrate basic proficiency in the Latvian language, and pass a test on the constitution and history of the country.
