Air police intercept big Russian fly-by

Take note – story published 8 years ago

Planes of NATO's Baltic air policing mission were scrambled Wednesday to intercept a large formation of Russian military aircraft over the Baltic Sea, Latvia's armed forces revealed via Twitter.

The twelve Russian visitors included various types: transport, interceptors and fighters.

Though Russian planes are frequently seen over the Baltic Sea, such a large formation is unusual.

Countries bordering the Baltic have heavily criticized Russia's practice of flying with transponders turned off, posing a serious threat to civil aviation in the region.

NATO's Baltic air policing mission operates from bases in Lithuania, Estonia and Poland.
