Officers of the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) arrived at the Freeport of Rīga Authority on February 7 but conducted no searches there, according to LETA’s sources.

KNAB representatives confirmed to LETA that the anti-corruption bureau has been “doing its job” at the Freeport of Riga Authority today.

“The KNAB's duties include not only procedural activities like arrests and searches, but also other activities, for instance, requesting and examining documents, inquiring officials,” the bureau’s representatives said.

Freeport of Riga Board Chairman Andris Ameriks, who recently stepped down as Rīga mayor after a huge corruption probe was started at the Rīgas satiksme municipal company, said that nobody had informed him about the visit of KNAB representatives and that he did not know anything about it.

Freeport of Riga spokeswoman Inga Saboviča confirmed that representatives of an “agency authorized to carry out investigative work” had paid a “cooperation visit” to the port on Thursday.

“Such cooperation visits have been and are made on a daily basis. Nothing extraordinary has happened. This is their job and rights to do their investigative work. We are open to communication and cooperation, we are not permitted to give any further comments,” Sabovica said.
