Artist animates anti-refugee attitudes

Take note – story published 8 years ago

Generally speaking, Latvians are against accepting 250 refugees over the course of two years. With the animation, titled This is What Latvia Sounds Like, artist Elīna Špura asks "Can Latvia really call itself an European country when holding such an attitude?".

"This is What Latvia Sounds Like shows how foreigners, who do not understand our language, see what we say as barking - an incomprehensible, annoying sound that leaves a negative impression," Špura said about her animation.

Her animations could be defined as 'quirky' - as her 2013 congratulation video on Latvia's Independence Day shows. Incidentally, it is also one of the most commented-on stories on LSM.

Elīna Špura is an author at the Ārpus ētera ("Off the record") section at LSM Latvian news site.
