Border Guard Chief Garbars announces early retirement

State Border Guard Chief Normunds Garbars, who has reached retirement age, has announced that he will be resigning from his post and will not complete his term.

State Border Guard Deputy Chief Guntis Pujāts is expected to be appointed in his place, likely next week.

Garbars was re-appointed the chief of the State Border Guard in 2016, with his term expected to conclude in 2022.

Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (New Unity) told LETA that he thanks General Garbars for his contribution towards the development of the Border Guard Service.

Garbars has been serving as the head of the Birder Guard Service since 2009.
