Border guards arrest three people smugglers

Latvian border guards have detained a total of 17 Vietnamese citizens for illegal crossing of Latvian borders and also three human traffickers, who are Russian citizens, in two separate incidents in recent days, the Latvian National Border Guard reported.

Upon discovering signs of illegal border crossing in the Aluksne municipality in north-eastern Latvia on July 11, the border guards mounted a chase with the help of trained dogs and after 11 kilometers caught a group of seven illegal immigrants from Vietnam and two human traffickers.

On July 13 signs of illegal border crossing were found also in the Pasiena municipality in south-eastern Latvia, and after a chase the border guards detained a group of 10 illegal immigrants from Vietnam and one human trafficker, who was accompanying them.

Criminal proceedings have been started for illegal crossing of the national borders and human trafficking.
