Latvian border guards so far this year have detained 162 citizens of third countries for illegal border crossing, which is much more than in full last year, the Border Guard said September 18.

Among the detained illegal immigrants there were 136 Vietnamese citizens, 15 Iraqi citizens, seven Russian citizens, two citizens of Bangladesh, one of Belarus and one of Tunisia.

Last year in total 104 people were detained for crossing Latvia’s border illegally, most of them were Vietnamese citizens.

As reported, Latvia is building up border infrastructure on the eastern border with Russia and Belarus in response to illegal immigration on what is the EU's outer border.
