A charity campaign has been launched collecting holiday presents for children who are growing up in Latvia in the families of asylum seekers and refugees, the Society Integration Foundation's representative Zaiga Pūce told LSM on November 24.

“Although this year has passed thinking of Ukrainians, with the active and unrelenting support to families fleeing the war caused by Russia, we would also like to remind the Latvian public of the children of asylum seekers and refugees this Christmas. They are children who have come from, for example, Afghanistan, Belarus, Iraq, Russia, Syria, or Congo, where their family members have been persecuted, and conflict or hostilities are taking place, so the support of fellow people is very important to them. Let us share with those who need it most!” said Zaiga Pūce.

“Christmas is the time when we want to have a wonderful and bright holiday. It is particularly important for children who have sought asylum in our country. We call for joy to be given to children of asylum seekers from different countries who are currently living in Latvia, who have been brought to peace from war, insecurity or conflict,” said Linda Jākobsone-Gavala, member of the association “I want to help refugees” (Gribu palīdzēt bēgļiem).

The charity will take place until December 12.

The charity initiative “Gift for children of asylum seekers” has been taking place for the seventh year, organized by the Society Integration Foundation in cooperation with the “I want to help refugees” movement, the association “Latvian Red Cross” and the Asylum seeker accommodation center “Mucenieki”.
