Eigims was detained December 18 in a criminal case the KNAB started over a Daugavpils official allegedly asking for a €10,000 bribe to gain favor in municipal procurement to renovate schools. His cabinet at the council was searched.
Eigims refused comment after being released. Another person, whose identity is not known, was also detained earlier and is now released from custody.
KNAB confirmed that Eigims and another person have been named suspects in a graft case.
According to the investigation, Daugavpils City Council concluded an agreement with the Modus Būve construction company over renovating two schools with prices significantly upped over the initial offer; it is thought that bribery was involved in procurements issued in 2017 and 2018.
Daugavpils is the second-largest city in Latvia.
