Rīga city council said January 17 it had handed out a large number of fines to property owners and managers who haven't cleaned their roofs of snow and ice in a manner that meets with municipal approval.

Over the past week the last week, Riga Municipality Police and the Administrative Inspectorate together have found 143 violations of rules governing the cleaning of sidewalks and roofs of buildings.

Riga City Executive Director Juris Radzevičs said people need to be especially vigilant in fast-changing weather conditions when sidewalks and roads can ice up in a very short period of time. Falling icicles and large quantities of snow sliding off roofs can cause serious injury and damage to people and cars below.

Current regulations provide for fines of up to 350 euros for individuals and up to 1,400 euros for companies.
