Fewer births, more deaths in August 2020 in Latvia

Data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) published September 16 show that in August of this year there were 643 deaths more than births.

In August 2020, number of registered births (1 543) was 8.0 % less than in the respective month of the previous year. Number of deaths in August comprised 2 186 and that is 11.6 % more than in August a year ago.

From January to August 12.0 thousand live births were registered, and that is 462 or 3.7 % less than in the first eight months of 2019. 18.5 thousand deaths were registered until August, which is almost 175 deaths or 0.9 % less than in January–August last year.

In August, 2 311 marriages were registered, which is 124 marriages less than in the respective month of the previous year.

In the eight months of this year 7,406 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 1,665 marriage or 18 % less than in the respective period of 2019.

Drop in the number of marriages registered was affected by the implementation of emergency situation in Latvia as of 13 March due to COVID-19 pandemic. The largest drop in the number of marriages, compared to data of 2019, were in May and June, when each month about 500 marriages less were registered (less by 50 % and 37 %, respectively). In August the number of marriages registered is already 5 % less than in the respective period of the previous year.
