Five officials face disciplinary measures over the death of a Latvian soldier during a training exercise on May 7, the Defense Ministry announced Wednesday.

A board of inquiry established by the ministry concluded that regulations were not properly followed and that various officers including the Unit Commander should be liable to disciplinary action by military police.

The investigation concluded that the unit needs to change its reporting procedure, as well as to develop an emergency action plan for similar incidents.

The investigation also recommended a compensation payment of 100,000 euros to the relatives of the dead soldier.

The incident happened in May when two special forces soldiers fell into the sea from a small boat during a training exercise approximately 18 kilometers from the Latvian coast.

One of them drowned following a considerable delay before rescuers arrived, the other was found alive but suffering from hypothermia.

It was the fourth peacetime death of a Latvian special forces soldier.
