Four dead in apparent farm gas leak

Latvian police said Friday that four people had died at a farm in Jaunberze, southern Latvia, LSM's Latvian language service reported, citing the LETA news service.

According to police, initial assumptions are that the four people were overcome by gas fumes in a utility room at the farm, possibly as a result of recent repairs to a manure storage tank.

Rescuers are reported to have found the two people dead in the closed utility room and two more nearby.

Another three people who were poisoned by inhalation of fumes have been transported to hospital.

Police are probling whether negligence contributed to the tragedy.
