Germany to send troops to Baltics

Take note – story published 8 years ago

Germany will follow the US by sending a series of troop deployments to the Baltic states on a 'rotating' basis, the BNS newswire reported Tuesday.

While until now only Americans have sent additional protection to the Baltic countries in the light of the Ukraine crisis, next year Germany will also send a rotating infantry company to the region, chairman of the Bundestag's national defense committee Hans-Peter Bartels said on Monday.

"Basically a rotating company will be sent to three East European countries for three months to take part in exercises," Bartels told the Estonian daily Postimees on Monday in Berlin.

Details of the decision will soon be clear but it is already known that the company should reach the Baltics next year.

It would basically be the same type of mission like the one US infantry companies that came to the Baltic states last year have had. No other NATO member state has embarked on a similar mission so far.
