Former Jurmala city prosecutor Irina Bogdanova was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty by a Riga court Tuesday for taking bribes and engaging in extortion.

Also sentenced was businessman Boris Rjazansksis, who got five years for staging, aiding and abetting the giving of a bribe.

Both were taken into custody in the courtroom and notified of further punishment in the form of property forfeiture.

Counsel for each of the accused said they would be appealing the verdict.

The case revolved around a demand for €35,571 by prosecutor Bogdanova, prompted by Rjazanskis, for the favorable handling of a proceeding. She was arrested in October 2008 upon delivery of the first half of the bribe she asked for.
