Eight Vietnamese citizens and a person involved in transporting them – a citizen of Poland – have been detained in Latgale along the Krāslava-Varnoviči highway near the border with Belarus, Border Guard spokeswoman Kristīne Pētersone told news agency LETA Friday.

The illegal border crossers were discovered hiding about 150 meters from the state border in Kaplava parish by Daugavpils region border guards who later pulled over a Renault Trafic van and held its Polish driver for illegally transporting the persons.

A criminal investigation is being launched into the border crossing and human trafficking incident.

This is the sixth time in the last two months that Border Guard officers have come upon a group of Vietnamese citizens illegally crossing the border from Russia or Belarus.
