House blows up in Jēkabpils, Latvia

On Thursday, July 8, a gas explosion occurred in an apartment building in Jēkabpils, State Police said July 9.

Police reported that on Thursday 15:51 they received information that an explosion had occurred in Jēkabpils, Madonas Street, in a multi-apartment house. Officers from the Jēkabpils precinct immediately went to the scene and found out that six residents had evacuated from four apartments.

On the second floor of the building, in an apartment likely to have had the gas explosion, the State Fire and Rescue Service found a man with extensive body burns (about 70%), who was immediately hospitalized.

Cars parked near the building were also damaged as a result of the explosion. At the moment, the police have received four applications for damage to vehicles. The building is no longer habitable

Criminal proceedings following Chapter 18 of the Criminal Law - criminal offenses against property have been initiated in the police. An investigation is ongoing to find out the circumstances of the incident.
