Introduction of bottle deposit system edges closer in Latvia

Take note – story published 4 years ago

On June 11, the Saeima National Economy Commission has finished preparing amendments to the packaging law for the second reading. The law requires the establishment of a beverage packaging deposit system in Latvia. Talks about its establishment have gone on for around 20 years.

At the moment, Latvia is the only country in the Baltic States that has yet to introduce a beverage packaging deposit system. There are, however, proposals already being made to amend the law yet again by adding norms that would ensure a wider application of deposit systems.

Rudīte Vesere, Director of the Environmental Protection Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, treats these proposals with caution.

“In our view, we first have to develop the beverage packaging system and then continue developing it further and evaluate the possibility of extending the deposit to other kinds of packaging […] To extend the system, additional analyses and evaluations are needed. The law does not mention specific types of beverages and types of packaging to which the deposit applies. So these issues can be sorted out as we go along,” said Vesere, according to comments attributed to her by LSM's Latvian language service.
