Jēkaba Square renamed Independence Square

Jēkaba Laukums (Jacob's Square) in Riga's Old Town will be renamed Independence Square, Saeima decided in the final reading of relevant legislation today.

The square is located between two historically important buildings crucial in Latvia's independence struggle - the National Theater Building where Latvia's independence was declared in 1918, as well as the Saeima building - where Latvia's independence was restored in 1990.

The rear of the Latvian central bank takes up one of the sides of the square, too.
