“My most heartfelt condolences to the family of Senator John McCain - a true defender of democracy and freedom, and a great friend of Latvia,” President Raimonds Vejonis said on Twitter.
Saeima Speaker Inara Murniece (National Alliance) said on Twitter that with McCain’s passing, Latvia has lost a trusty friend and the United States - a true statesman. “We will keep memories of our meetings and conversations on defense, his sharp mind and deep understanding of the Baltic nations’ fate,” the Latvian parliament speaker said.
Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (Unity) wrote on Twitter that “Latvia has lost a true friend and supporter. I was always inspired by his vision and courage, he was great statesman and war hero. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and to American people”.
Republican Senator McCain, who was known for his consistent support for the Baltic states, died on Saturday, aged 81. He was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor in July 2017 and had been undergoing medical treatment.
