Viktors Zaķis, spokesman for Rīgas Satiksme, said that 2,425 ticketless passengers were caught in buses, 1,892 in trolleybuses and 1,739 in trams. Most of them were issued fine receipts, while some paid their fines right away.
Rigas Satiksme ticket inspectors conducted 22,803 inspections in August this year, which was an increase by 3.8 percent over July. The highest number of inspections was conducted in buses (10,745), followed by trolleybuses (7,459) and trams (4,599).
In July 2015, Rigas Satiksme ticket inspectors carried out 21,969 inspections and caught 4,863 ticketless passengers.
Rigas Satiksme, which is fully owned by the Riga City Council, provides bus, tram and trolleybus services to passengers in Riga.
The fine for using public transportation without a ticket is €20 if paid in cash, or from €30 to €50 if a fine receipt is written.
