More people smugglers nabbed by the Border Guard

On Saturday, the Border Guard have detained 22 Vietnamese citizens and four human traffickers - two Latvian citizens, and two Russian citizens, the BNS newswire reported Monday.

On Saturday, signs of illegal border crossing were discovered and an emergency plan for such situations was put into action. A search party was formed with trained dogs and aviation forces, leading to detaining the aforementioned persons.

Criminal proceedings have been started for illegally crossing the state border in a group.

In the last few months, the Border Guard have regularly detained people smugglers along with illegal border crossers from countries like Vietnam. 

The 239 illegal immigrants held in Latvia so far this year include 165 immigrants from Vietnam, 20 from Afghanistan, 13 from Russia, six from Iraq and five from Syria. Border guards have also detained 52 immigrant traffickers, including 22 Latvian citizens, 22 Russians, three Estonians, three Poles, one Kyrgyz and one Tajik.
