She reminded that people can face fines of up to €700 if caught in the act. Alas, but a few people are actually fined each year, because they usually leave the scene before the fire brigade arrives.
Last year there were more than 2,000 grass fires registered in Latvia. Most of them were at the Dobele municipality, but some, like Lubāna, Rauna, and Mālpils did went smoke-free.
Fires like these are common in Latvia as people ignore official warnings and burn off last year's grass in the fields, risking life and limb in the process.
