Mortality still exceeds fertility rates

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Over the past three years, the fertility rate in Latvia has changed little and constitutes 22 thousand annually. Preliminary data by Latvia's Statistics Office show that 10,175 children were born in the first half of 2017, which is 990 fewer on year.

The number of newborns does not include children born outside Latvia to mothers (permanent resident of Latvia) who are staying abroad. The data on children born abroad will be added to the number in April 2018.

In the first half of the year, the number of deaths is similar to that registered in the six months of the previous year – 14,923 (an increase of 10 deaths).

Latvia's population growth has been negative since 1991. During the first half of 2017, as the number of deaths exceeded the number of births, Latvia's population declined by 4,748 persons (in the corresponding period of 2016 – by 3,748).
