National Alliance still floats extra minister portfolio

The National Alliance still would like to discuss the position of a demographic affairs minister or other solutions to demography problems with the potential coalition partners.

National Alliance’s chairman Raivis Dzintars said after the meeting with the New Unity representatives that the January 7 talks were more about the process how the government declaration is being organized and problem issues are solved.

The National Alliance is ready to work to agree on the declaration in two weeks.

Speaking about the overall situation, Dzintars said that what is happening right now is a result of serious compromises and the party still is dissatisfied with a number of issues.

He reminded that New Unity proposed to establish a minister’s post for the demographic issues, but KPV LV is against it. “We do not think that the form is the most important issue. If the goal can be achieved in a different way, we are ready to discuss it,” he said.

President Vējonis on January 7 nominated European Parliament member Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity) as Latvia’s next prime minister.

Kariņš has proposed forming a coalition government that would include New Unity, the New Conservative Party, Development/For!, KPV LV and the National Alliance. The Greens and Farmers Union and Harmony would remain in the opposition.
