Latvia's tennis sensation Jelena Ostapenko (often referred to as Aļona in her homeland) was named Rigan of the year November 18 in a ceremony at the newly-restored VEF cultural center in the Latvian capital.

The award was made by Riga City Council "for outstanding achievements in high-level tennis competitions and promoting the recognition of Riga around the world."

Meanwhil a sports star from the past, women's basketball player Uļjana Semjonova received a lifetime achievement award.

The awards were decided by a jury led by Riga mayor Nils Ušakovs.

Previous years have seen the award handed to musician Raimonds Pauls, conductors Romāns Vanags and Maris Sirmais, theater director Alvis Hermanis and others.

And if you would like to take a look around the renovated VEF art space, a rather impressive film has been produced. By clicking the direction buttons at the top of the screen you can even pan around the different rooms.
