As Latvians begin marking their national patriotic holiday week, the National Armed Forces (NBS) continued to tweet reports of Russian navy activity in the Baltic sea very close to Latvia’s maritime border.

Overnight to Tuesday NBS patrols sighted the Tarantul-class ship R-2, according to the most recent report tweeted.

However on Monday the NBS also revealed that patrols had spotted and followed the movements of several Russian military vessels beginning late Friday, when they identified a Kilo-class submarine and Parchim-class corvette Kazanec 311.

Then Saturday afternoon the two ships were joined by submarine support ship SS-750, all three then departing from the margins of Latvia’s Exclusive Economic Zone only later that night.

Russian navy ships and planes have skirted Latvia’s waters and airspace a total of 173 times this year, according to Defense Ministry tallies.
