Photos: Reinstating Latvian independence on May 4, 1990

Take note – story published 4 years ago

On May 4, 1990, Latvia reinstated its independence. Here are some photos from the events by the building of the Supreme Council (interim parliament) and other places across Old Rīga.

That day the Supreme Council of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic adopted the Declaration "On the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia" and renewed the 1922 Constitution of Latvia, making it a free and democratic state once again.

Thank you to the AFI photo agency and to Valda Kalniņa for the permission to publish this historical testimony of May 4, 1990.
