The pilot of a light aircraft was killed Wednesday night when his plane crashed near the southern Latvian town of Jelgava, LTV reported Thursday morning.

The incident happened at around 8 pm, Civil Aviation Agency director Māris Gorodcovs told the channel, and involved a self-built aircraft.

“It is of a well known design – probably the most common amateur-built model regarded as very reliable and easy to handle,” Gorodcovs said.

However, the plane in question was believed to have been involved in an earlier crash, raising questions about whether it had been properly repaired, he added.

The pilot is believed to have been a 45-year-old man, according to the State Fire and Rescue Service.

An investigation is underway.
