Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis returned to screens across the country Tuesday courtesy of a YouTube video uploaded to his official channel.

In the video below, Vejonis speaks from his bed in a hospital intensive care unit where he is continuing treatment after major heart surgery.

He begins by thanking the medical staff who are treating him, then moves on to thank members of the public who have wished him well and Saeima speaker Inara Murniece who is deputizing for him during his absence.

"Thank you for your good thoughts and words, which have been sent to me via social media. Your love gives me the strength to recover more quickly. Thank you. I love you all," a clearly emotional President says.

He says he has spoken with Prime Ministerial candidate Maris Kucinskis and is ready to approve a new government.

"During my illness I have followed developments in the country. I am delighted that the new government formation process is approaching the finish line," an accompanying statement says.

"I am grateful to the Chairman of the Saeima Ināra Mūrniece for fulfilling my duties during my illness illness. While remaining in hosital I will gradually resume Presidential duties," Vejonis said.
