Prosecutor takes legal action against religious organization

Prosecutor General Juris Stukāns has turned to the court for the termination of the activities of the religious organization “Jaunā paaudze”, the prosecutor's office said November 10.

The Prosecutor's Office, during the “Jaunā paaudze” performance review, found that, contrary to the requirements of social distancing and other activities intended for epidemiological safety, the Rīga congregation of the “Jaunā paaudze” Evangelical Christian Church had gathered at least six times in the course of 2021 in public events, despite the fact that administrative penalties have already been applied.

The materials evaluated during the examination performed by the Prosecutor's Office shall give the basis for bringing an action for the termination of the activities of the religious organization by a court decision.

On November 10, 2021, Riga City Pārdaugava Court submitted a request from the Prosecutor General for the termination of the activities of the religious organization “Jaunā paaudze: Rīga congregation” and the religious organization “Jaunā paaudze”.

At the same time, the application requests a temporary protection instrument: a prohibition on the defendant to carry out certain activities and a ban on the taking of any public activity (with viewers in physical presence), including services, regardless of the location of the activity.
